Racecourse Road at CityLink Closed After Truck Brings Down Tram Lines

Written for Broadsheet

This afternoon a truck brought down overhead tram lines on Racecourse Road beneath the CityLink overpass.

The outbound lane of Racecourse Road is currently closed with traffic being diverted via Boundary Road and Stubbs Street. The inbound lane was closed but reopened recently. Emergency services are on site, and VicRoads has advised drivers to avoid the area, describing traffic as “very heavy”.

Repairs are expected to continue until at least 6pm. Yarra Trams has advised commuters “this delay may take some time to clear”.

Route 57 trams have been rerouted in both directions, diverting via Mount Alexander Road and Ascot Vale Road along routes 59 and 82 between Melrose Street and Union Road.

It’s recommended passengers travelling from Ascot Vale Road hop on bus 404 (Footscray-Moonee Ponds) and change at Moonee Ponds Junction to connect with route 59 and diverting route 57 trams.

Epsom Road passengers can take bus 472 from Francis Street (Williamstown-Moonee Ponds) and change at Moonee Ponds Junction to connect with route 59 and diverting route 57 trams.
